Pregnancy in Review

A few highlights (the good and the bad) of my pregnancy...

1. I had terrible "morning sickness" until about the middle of November. Oddly enough, mornings were my best times. I said that was God's way of being kind to me because I doubt I would have gotten out of the bed otherwise. I pretty much felt nautious 24/7 and got sick at least once a day. I had to force myself to eat and I literally had to take one day at a time. Apparently I throw up weird because I blew out all the blood vessels in both eyes and had bright red eyes for about 2-3 weeks. It didn't hurt, but it looked awful. The worst part was everyone (strangers) asking about it and then having to explain what was going on. And then people would feel the need to tell me their horror stories... and if they didn't have one then someone they knew did and I got to hear about that. Let me just say that was not helpful in the least. I tried to remember that the absolute worst was that I would be sick until April... at least I had an end. Thankfully, my appetite did eventually return and I felt so much better.

2. Because of my height and the fact that I was not a small person to begin with, I didn't actually begin to show where people could tell until about month 7-8. This actually annoyed me to no end. I felt pregnant. I couldn't wear my normal clothes. Even though others couldn't see it, I did not have that big of a belly before I was pregnant.

3. When I actually got the point where others could tell I was pregnant, I became thankful that I wasn't that big throughout the pregnancy. I was so uncomfortable and couldn't imagine having felt that for months!

4. I really didn't have that many people ask me if I was pregnant and no random people asked to touch my belly. I was grateful for that.

5. The last couple of months, I had the pregnant waddle. I hated it. The more I tried to not do it, the more I did. I just couldn't help it. People did notice this. I had a transporter from the hospital where I work ask me if I was ok when he saw me walking down the hall. When I turned around, his exact words were "Oh". He understood.

6. In January or February I had a patient (cute little old lady) ask me if I had any children. I told her no, but I would come April. Her response was to look at my belly, look at me, and look at my belly again. She then asked me if the doctor had told me that.

7. One of the hardest things for me was trying to get my registry together. There are just so many choices and things that some say you really need and others say you don't need at all. I bought a review book and just did the best I could. Mom and Dad came up one weekend and went shopping with me. Dad was a trooper during the 2 hour stint at Babies 'R Us!

8. We were blessed to have 4 baby showers.

9. We finally got the upstairs rooms cleaned out, organized, and ready for baby to come. Thanks to my amazing dad and father-in-law for painting everything and picking up our baby furniture for us!

10. Feeling the baby move for the first time was really hard for me to describe. I kept trying to get Zach to feel him move and he finally was able to early on Christmas morning. It was the best Christmas present! I was so thankful to get to share that with him. I loved feeling baby move from then on. There were times when I thought he never slept! Toward the end, he kept stretching those feet up into my ribs and that actually hurt. I would try and push him down... most of the time unsuccessfully.

11. I finally figured out what baby hiccups felt like. Until someone described it to me as a rhythmic movement, I didn't know exactly what I was feeling. From then on, I could tell every time he got them!

12. I loved checking each month in my books to see what baby was up too. I was amazed to find out that he was actually transparent for a while until his skin pigments and fat started developing. His hearing, vocal cords, thumb sucking, and fingernails developing were highlights for me.

13. My favorite part of every doctor's visit was getting to hear his heartbeat.

14. I loved the ultrasound when we got to see him looking like a person. We found out within seconds that he was a boy! I was most amazed by seeing the blood flow through his heart and seeing his tiny spine. Loved getting to share that time with Zach and my parents. Then came the fun of calling EVERYONE and sharing our happy news. We are going to have a son!!

15. My husband was amazing through everything. He totally supported me and loved on me just when I needed it throughout everything.

16. Reflux. Never had it before in my life. Started up right after I quit throwing up. It's horrible. Had it all the way through the pregnancy and into delivery. Zantec and tums were my very close friends.

17. I got my normal sinus infection sometime in February and it lasted for about 3 weeks. It was not fun. I couldn't take any of my normal medicines and the ones I could take did not help a whole lot.

18. I love how excited everyone else was getting as time got closer. I especially loved how my brother was!

19. I failed my glucose screening by 2 points and had to go back for the 3 hour test. It was not fun. That sugary drink left a horrible aftertaste and kept making me almost throw up. I had to call mom so I could be distracted and not throw up. I did not want to have to do the test again. I ended up having to do the 1 hour test one more time and finally passed!

20. It became very difficult to tie my shoes because I couldn't reach them. The last 6 weeks or so my feet were so swollen I could only wear tennis shoes or flip flops.

22. I was sad the day I had to take my rings off, but I couldn't stand the thought of them having to be cut off because I couldn't get them off any other way.

23. I remember them telling me on my first visit that normal weight gain for me would be between 25-35 pounds. That made me sick. I ended up gaining about 27-30 pounds. It was really all baby and fluid at the end! I was pleased.

24. The first time we went to Babies 'r Us was just a little bit overwhelming.

25. Dreaming of what my little guy would look like. I hoped he would look like Zach with his broad shoulders and dark brown eyes but have my height.

26. When I told my Papaw he was going to have a great-grandson I will treasure that his reaction was to remind me that the Lord had great plans for him.

27. Zach found the pirate bedding that we both fell in love with. It would have been helpful to notice that it was out of stock everywhere. I went ahead and ordered it thinking it would come in some time in April. The company kept pushing back the date and I eventually had to cancel the order. As a last resort, I found this place in Chattanooga that carried that brand. I called them just to see if they had it in stock. They did and ended up mailing it to me that day. I got it 2 days later. Totally a God thing!

28. In October, I finally felt up to going to a football game with Zach. He went out that morning and came home with a bright orange jacket for me. He said it was so me and baby wouldn't get cold.

29. I never really had any crazy cravings. I would want certain things, but that really wasn't any different from before I got pregnant. There was a stretch of about 3 days that I had Arby's curly fries every day but other than that... pretty normal.

30. I loved how excited my 3rd grade Sunday school girls got about me being pregnant. Especially at the end... they were always asking how much longer it was going to be!
