Birthday Travel

Dad always had meetings in August. His meetings were for getting ready for Christmas, which always seemed to confuse me since Christmas is still 4 months away. It never failed that he would be out of town for either Ben's birthday (15th), his and mom's anniversary (18th) or my birthday. Almost every year we knew this was how it would be and worked around it. We scheduled parties, dinners, etc. for the closest date that he would be there. It wasn't his choice, but that's just how it was and mom and dad always made it work. We knew that it wasn't about celebrating on the actual day, but just celebrating with those that we loved.

Probably the worst year that he could have missed was my 16th birthday. I was so disappointed when I found out, but he made up for it. He took me out on a date just before he left and we went to dinner and to the mall. Dad is always good at making me feel special. He surprised me and we picked out a charm for my charm bracelet that said "Sweet Sixteen". And you know, I probably remember him taking time out just for me and celebrating with me more than I would have remembered him being in town on my actual birthday. Sometimes, it's the little things that mean the most.
