The Lord is truly amazing in how he orchestrates seemingly unrelated events to weave together His plan for us. The story of how my husband, Zach, and I met begins way before our first encounter.
Zach grew up in Powell, TN. His mom works for the government and in 2002 had the opportunity to move to Clarksville for a promotion. Melanie and Charley are very godly people, and felt that the move to Clarksville was what the Lord had for them at that time. They were both involved in missions and choir at their church in Powell and when they began searching for a church home in Clarksville they were looking for a place they could jump in and serve. After much prayer, they felt the Lord leading them to join Hilldale Baptist Church.
My family moved to Clarksville in 1991. I grew up at Hilldale and after I went away to college, I always visited when I would come home. I became involved with missions at my church in Murfreesboro and traveled to China a few times. Because of the support from my home church during those trips, I felt led to share with them some of the things the Lord did on those trips. This allowed Melanie to get an introduction of who I was. My parents were also in the choir and my mom and Melanie sat together on occasion. As many parents do, they talked about their children.
Melanie asked mom if she thought I would be interested in showing her son, Zach, around sometime when he was in town. He came to visit her some, but didn't know anyone in the area. The first question my mom asked her was if he was tall. Odd question to some, but I come from a tall family and this was a legitimate question. Melanie wasn't quite sure how to answer the question, but the next week in choir she came back with Zach's exact height. I guess mom gave approval and they decided we should meet.
My mom knows me better than most anyone and she knew that I would not be too excited about a blind date. So she did not tell me anything about her conversations with Melanie until the day that Zach was possibly going to call. We were sitting at the kitchen table and Melanie called mom to see if it was ok for Zach to call me that day. Mom said sure and after they hung up was the first I ever heard the name Zach Whitaker. I was not too thrilled about the idea, but what could I say. Not much later (after Zach got up the courage to call) I received a phone call from Zach. He introduced himself and after some small talk asked if I wanted to go to dinner and a movie. I hesitated for a minute and then said sure. We decided on a time and then I had to let my brother give directions to our house out in the middle of nowhere.
Mom and Dad had a Christmas dinner to go to and were not going to be at the house when Zach got there, so Ben was there with me when Zach got there. Right on time... the doorbell rang and of course Pepper(the dog) went crazy. Ben answered the door and let Zach in. With me in my bluejeans and a light pink turtleneck I met Zach who was wearing kakhi pants, a blue check button up shirt with a maroon sweater over it, and his "tall" shoes. (I much later found out he and his mom had bought his clothes that day because he didn't have the right date clothes.)
After a little bit of awkwardness, brief hellos and a goodbye to Ben, we left. On December 20, 2003 I went out on my first blind date and my last first date.
