The doctors still didn’t know what was going on with gk. On Monday they had taken some fluid off of her left lung (250cc) and she was able to breathe much better after that. She kept saying that her left nostril was even clearer! (The two were not related, but it was good that she was feeling better!) She was even able to come off the oxygen for a little while, which was a huge relief for her. She does not like the nasal cannula. I don’t blame her! The fluid that they had taken off her lung was sent off for lots of testing and as of Wednesday everything had come back negative, but there were still a few results they were waiting to get back.
Thursday morning the doctor came in and told them more of the results had come back and they revealed she had cancer. Even now, I have a hard time writing that word. It just doesn’t seem real. I’ve known several people who have had cancer but when it’s MY grandmother it’s surreal. Mom called me at work to give me the news and I was numb. I called Zach and he came and met me for lunch, I just needed him. And he was there.
They ended up releasing her from the hospital that evening. She was very relieved to be home. They ran a couple more tests and on May 30 mom, my aunt, and gk met with the oncologist to get the results. She was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma, a rare form of cancer. It is a cancer of unknown origin that is in her fluid, hence the fluid around her lungs and it is also in her abdomen. There is no cure. They gave her 3-12 months.
What were the first words out of gk’s mouth? “My God is bigger than cancer.”
Amen.
