Sermon Notes

Our pastor is teaching a series of sermons entitled "The Sufficiency of Christ". Last week the title was "I Am the Resurrection and the Life" taken from John 11:25-26. The following are some notes from the sermon.

Instead of trusting in the sufficiency of Christ, America has turned to false gods:
1. The false god of government
- government being seen as the provider
- "It is not the responsibility of the government to support its citizens." Pres. Grover Cleveland
- "Happiness with results of any big government effort of course, is an oxymoron. The reason is simply that when people start putting their trust in big government, they've attached themselves to a false god. And false gods can't produce the goods." Joel Beltz
- 1857 economy decline. 1858 American revival.

2. The false god of money
- Judges 10:13-14
- Our trust must be in a Savior that is sufficient

I. The Claims of Christ (v. 25)
- a mature faith rests in soverign providence of God.
- **There is no panic in heaven right now!**
- Our God does all things well and on time.
- He is the resurrection and the life.

II. The Promise of Christ (v.26)
- those in Christ never die a spiritual death

III. The Condition for Jesus Promise (v.26)
- Faith
- Believe - savingly believe
- Trust in and rely on Christ alone.
- "Weep not, I shall not die; and as I leave the land of the dying, I trust to see the blessings of the Lord in the land of the living. We call this world the land of the living; but it would be in fact more correct to call it the land fo the dying. Through Jesus Christ we know that we are journeying, not to the sunset, but to the sunrise." King Edward the Confessor

I love that last quote. I also am thankful for the reminder that no matter what the world tries to tell us in this crazy election, economic, and war times our God is in control. He is not taken by surprise by anything that is happening and He is just as in control today as He was yesterday.

Thank you Jesus!!
